Internship at a Software Company

AutoForm is a spin-off from ETH some 25 years ago and develops CAD/CAE software. We are the world’s leading provider of software for the sheet metal forming industry. Our software is used by all of the top 20 automotive manufacturers and hundreds of suppliers for process simulation, optimization, tool design, and feasibility studies. We are presently looking for interns to join our development team in Zurich.

High-Quality Geometric Analyses for FE Meshes

Objective

Stamping simulations are usually done with finite elements (FE). The meshes used for such simulations are first and foremost tailored to the needs of the simulation (see fig. 1). AutoForm uses triangular meshes, which consist of preferably equilateral triangles and which are refined by splitting one triangle into four. The resulting meshes are unfortunately not aligned with the features of the formed part, which-without further action-limits the quality of geometric analyses. In a previous internship a method was developed to create high-quality zebra lines for FE meshes (see fig. 2). This method makes use of the underlying CAD geometry while preserving the shape specific to the formed and possibly sprungback sheet. The objective of this internship is to adopt this technology for other geometric analyses, such as curvature, surface defect and wrinkling analyses (see fig. 3).

Requirements

  • Solid programming skills in C++
  • Good knowledge of OO methodologies and design
  • Experience with scientific computing and geometry modeling
  • Strong enthusiasm for solving technical problems
