Material cost is a significant portion of the piece cost of sheet metal parts; for high volume parts, material cost is more than 50% of piece cost, and clearly exceeds (fixed) tooling cost. Part geometry and its complexity, material gage and grade, as well as anticipated scrap – engineered scrap and coil scrap: these factors together determine material cost for a given sheet metal product. This training enables users to estimate material cost using AutoForm quickly, easily and reliably based on part geometry.
Training focuses on the following key steps involved in establishing material costs:
- Tipping / rotation of the part geometry from design to stamping orientation
- Modifications to part geometry
(filling holes, smoothing the part boundary, etc.) - Development of blank shape from 3D part geometry
- Optimal embedding / nesting of blank on the coil
- Determination of material cost based on cost schedules
(coil width – gage – price per ton)
By providing best practices in the determination of blank shape and material cost, this course complements Planning & Bidding I – for estimating tooling cost – in estimating overall piece cost for a given part geometry, excluding production cost elements.

Audience
This one-day training is intended for planners and cost estimators who have to determine the material costs. No prior AutoForm training or experience is required.
Training seminars are held at AutoForm’s offices in the USA, Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Japan and Korea. Upon request, the seminars can also be held at customer sites. Please contact your AutoForm team to schedule a session.
